Carta enviada al Senador Marco Rubio el 25 de mayo de 2018 en favor de la liberación del investigador cubano Ariel Ruiz Urquiola
Dear Senator Rubio,
My name is Dr Jorge Gonzalez Torres. I'm currently administering the Blog CUBAN GENERATION WHY which principal mission is to expose all the abuse and crimes happening in Cuba to the public international opinion.
I have followed the case of a Doctor in Biology Ariel Ruiz Urquiola. I know you advocated for him on the senate and I would like to express my admiration and gratitude for all you have done for the Cuban cause.
I just hanged the phone with her sister Omara and she informed me of the latest incidents in regards her brother. After being expelled from University of Havana the regime refused to provide the medication necessary for the treatment of his sister's breast cancer. Dr Ruiz initiated a hunger strike and was arrested in three different occasions. He was released after being violently abused and every time he returned to the protest in front on the Institute of Oncology.
Dr Ruiz Urquiola went to live in Sierra del Infierno, close to the Valle de Vinales, as a simple farmer and recently he was interrogated by two rural police whom harassed him repetitively asking for papers and permits. Once Dr Ruiz provided the permits he asked for their names and of course, they refused to provide any identification. He explained if they were "Guardias Rurales", they should identified them self as such.
Dr Ruiz Urquiola was arrested and taken to prison for "desacato" (disrespect to the authorities). A "summary trial" was done and was condemned to one year in jail.
As per the conversation with his sister, Dr Ruiz looks very weak, thin and has been suffering constant physical and psychological abuse. The Court refused the resource of appeal so the year in prison hasn't even started. We desperately need your support and collaboration on the senate to expose one more time this outrageous crime. You are our only and last hope to stop all this madness.
I know we can count on you to inform the Senate of what is already a daily practice in Cuba against freedom of expression.
